Timeline of North Houston Early College High School

2008 – Founding Year

  • North Houston Early College High School (NHECHS) is established as one of five Houston ISD’s first Early College campuses.

  • Opens in portable buildings on the Houston Community College–Northline campus.

  • Designed to offer tuition-free college credit alongside a rigorous high school curriculum for historically underserved students.

2012–2017 – Early Leadership & First Graduations

  • Under Principal Angela Lundy-Jackson, NHECHS graduates its first six cohorts: Classes of 2012 through 2017.

  • Builds a foundational culture of college-going, student empowerment, and high academic standards.

2015 – National Recognition

  • NHECHS is named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for academic excellence and closing achievement gaps.

2016 – New Campus Opens

  • NHECHS moves into a new, permanent three-story facility on the HCC Northline site.

  • The facility strengthens the school’s college-focused model, offering enhanced access to academic and student support services.

2018–2020 – Sustaining Excellence

  • Under Principal Brian Gaston, the school continues strong performance, graduating the Classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020.

  • Focuses on deepening college credit access and maintaining instructional rigor.

2020 – Leadership Transition

  • Dr. Samantha Brooks is appointed principal in Summer 2020.

  • Leads the campus through pandemic recovery while elevating academic accountability, instructional leadership, and community engagement.

2021 – Blue Ribbon Award (Again)

  • NHECHS earns its second National Blue Ribbon School recognition, highlighting its continued commitment to excellence and student outcomes.

2019–2022 – College Readiness Distinctions

  • Earns consecutive College Success Awards from GreatSchools, honoring schools that excel in preparing students for college-level work.

2024 – Mission & Core Values Reimagined

  • Updates the school’s mission and vision to align more closely with student voice, equity, and community expectations.

  • Introduces updated Core Values that reflect who we are and what we expect from one another:

    • Accountability – We take ownership of our actions and outcomes.

    • Stewardship – We responsibly manage the trust placed in us.

    • Advocacy – We actively support every student’s success.

    • Perseverance – We commit to growth and excellence through all challenges.
